Plain-language summary

Hakaya uses account information to let you sign in, invite other players, write shared stories, generate optional media, manage credits or subscriptions, and receive notifications. We do not sell personal information or use third-party advertising in the current app. Shared story content may remain available to other participants after account deletion, with your identity removed.

This policy applies to Hakaya, the story app and related website at www.hakaya.net. For privacy, account deletion, safety, legal, or support requests, contact Hakaya Support.

If you cannot access your account in the app, you can still request help through Hakaya Support.

Information we collect

  • Account information such as phone number, username, profile id, user id, and sign-in identifiers.
  • Invitation information such as invitee phone numbers and invite status.
  • Optional selected contact information, such as a selected contact's display name or phone number, when you choose a device contact for an invitation.
  • Story data such as titles, settings, sentences, contributions, invitations, turns, participants, and playback state.
  • Generated media data such as prompts, selected sentence, selected style, image or video assets, thumbnails, continuity frames, model settings, generation status, and related metadata.
  • Wallet and purchase-related records such as credit balance, ledger entries, product identifiers, store provider, transaction identifiers, receipt tokens, and subscription status.
  • Notification data such as notification records, unread status, push tokens, and notification payload metadata.
  • App activity needed for invites, local drafts, settings, retention, export jobs, security, abuse prevention, and troubleshooting.
  • Support requests you send through the help desk, including any information you choose to include.

How we use information

  • To create and manage your account.
  • To let users start, continue, invite, reveal, archive, export, and review stories.
  • To generate optional AI images or videos for selected story scenes.
  • To manage credits, purchases, subscriptions, refunds, and billing-related records.
  • To send app notifications about turns, invitations, wallet activity, and story status.
  • To save generated media, thumbnails, exports, and story playback files.
  • To enforce deletion, expiry, preservation, purge, moderation, and support workflows.
  • To protect Hakaya, users, and shared stories from abuse, unsafe content, or policy violations.

Sharing and visibility

Hakaya is built for shared stories. Story participants and invited viewers may see story content according to the story settings. Generated media attached to a story scene may be visible to the people allowed to see that story. Private exports are visible to the requester through normal app paths.

We use service providers to operate Hakaya. These include Firebase and Google Cloud services for authentication, database storage, file storage, Cloud Functions, and push messaging; OpenAI for optional AI media generation; Apple App Store and Google Play for store purchases, subscriptions, and receipt validation; and support or help desk tools when you contact Support.

We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect users or Hakaya, to investigate abuse or security issues, or as part of a business transfer such as a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets.

AI-generated media

If you choose to generate media, Hakaya may send story context, the selected sentence, style settings, and related generation metadata to media generation services such as OpenAI. Reference images or previous generated media may also be used to help keep character and setting continuity. Text-only turns do not require media generation.

Generated media may be stored with the story, shown to story participants, used for story playback, and retained or expired according to the retention rules below.

Contacts and invitations

Hakaya lets you invite other people to continue a story. You may type an invitee's phone number or, on supported Android builds, choose a contact from your device. When you choose a contact, Hakaya receives the selected contact's phone number and may receive the display name returned by the device picker. Hakaya does not upload your full address book.

Notifications and device data

If you enable notifications, Hakaya may collect and store push notification tokens and notification metadata so it can send turn, invitation, wallet, and story-status updates. Notification payloads may include story ids, notification ids, turn state, story titles, preview sentences, preview asset URLs, and timing details needed to open the correct app screen.

Purchases and subscriptions

Hakaya uses app store billing for credits and subscriptions. Store purchase records may include product ids, transaction ids, receipt or purchase tokens, billing provider, billing platform, environment, and subscription state. Hakaya uses these records to validate purchases, restore subscriptions, credit your wallet, prevent duplicate use of transactions, and handle refunds or subscription events.

Retention, expiry, and deletion

Hakaya uses retention windows for stories, generated media, and exports. Removing something from your library usually hides it from your own view rather than deleting it for everyone. Expired content may become unavailable before it is physically purged.

  • Inactive non-terminal stories can become retention-risky after 30 days of inactivity if no valid turn or invite remains.
  • Completed, cancelled, or inactive-at-risk stories have a 90-day free retention window before expiry eligibility, unless a participant has preserving Plus access.
  • Expired stories may be physically purged after an additional 180-day purge delay.
  • Unused generated media has a 90-day free retention window and may be physically purged after an additional 90-day expired-unused-media purge delay.
  • Story exports are requester-specific and may have separate short-lived availability windows.

Account deletion removes private account data and signs you out. Submitted scenes in shared stories may be preserved as shared work with your identity removed. You can read more in the account deletion article and delete and expiry policies.

If you cannot access the in-app deletion flow, contact Hakaya Support to request account deletion assistance.

Your choices

  • You can update profile information in the app.
  • You can choose whether each turn stays text-only or generates media.
  • You can archive stories or remove items from your own library.
  • You can delete your account from Settings.
  • You can request account deletion assistance through Support if you cannot access the app.
  • You can contact Support for privacy, safety, legal, or sensitive-content removal requests.

Advertising, sale, and tracking

Hakaya does not currently sell personal information, use third-party advertising SDKs, or use personal information for third-party ad tracking. If Hakaya adds advertising, analytics, or tracking features later, this policy and the app store privacy disclosures should be updated before those features are released.

International processing

Hakaya and its service providers may process information in the United States and other countries where the providers operate. Privacy protections and government access rules may differ from those in your country.

Children

Hakaya is not intended for children under the age required by applicable law to use online services without parental consent. If you believe a child provided personal information through Hakaya, contact Support.

Security

We use technical and organizational measures to protect account and story data, including encrypted network connections, Firebase and Google Cloud security controls, access controls, and permission rules designed to limit who can access story and account records. No online service can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure, so please use care with what you choose to write or share.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as Hakaya changes. If the changes are significant, we will provide notice in the app or through another reasonable channel.
